The Republic of Azerbaijan and International Labour Organization (ILO)

The main international body that the Republic of Azerbaijan cooperates in the labour sphere is the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The ILO was established in 1919, as part of the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I. The main objective of the establishment was to reflect the belief that universal and lasting peace can be accomplished only if it is based on social justice. The Constitution was drafted between January and April, 1919, by the Labour Commission set up by the Peace Conference, which first met in Paris and then in Versailles.  In 1946, the ILO became a specialized agency of the newly formed United Nations. The ILO has 185 member-states. Since October 1st 2012 the Director-General of the ILO is G.Ryder from Great Britain.

The ILO is the international organization responsible for drawing up and overseeing international labour standards. It is the only 'tripartite' United Nations agency that brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers to jointly shape policies and programmes promoting “Decent work for all”. This unique arrangement gives the ILO an edge in incorporating 'real world' knowledge about employment and work.

The ILO accomplishes its work through three main bodies (The International Labour Conference, the Governing body and the Office (carrying out the functions of Secretariat)) which comprise governments', employers' and workers' representatives. Besides, there are ILO Regional Offices for Africa, for Latin Americas and the Caribbean,  for Arab Statesfor Asia and the Pacific, and Europe and Central Asia.
