The delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan participated at the 51st Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO.

The delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan participated at the 51st Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held on 23 September – 2 October 2013 in Geneva. The delegation of Azerbaijan met, on 24 September 2013, with F.Gurry, the Director-General of the WIPO. During the meeting, Azerbaijani delegation referred to the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the patent and copyright offices in Azerbaijan and the video greeting of F.Gurry was highly appreciated. It was mentioned that, the Government of Azerbaijan considers the development of intellectual property field as the priority direction and Azerbaijan supports the initiatives and activities of the WIPO in this regard. During the past one year, a number of important events have happened in the field of copyright in Azerbaijan, the new law on “Enforcing intellectual property rights and fighting against piracy” entered into force in October 2012. By the decision of the Government, Enforcement Centre on Intellectual Property Rights was established under the Copyright Agency. The obvious example of the great attention paid by the Leadership of Azerbaijan to the intellectual property field is the inclusion of the issues related to the development of the intellectual property as the priority direction in “Azerbaijan 2020: the vision to the future” development concept, adopted in December 2012. As the result of systematic measures carried our during the last years, the special weight of the intellectual property in the economy of Azerbaijan increased and level of piracy on various segments decreased, on average, 9-28%.

The membership of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Program and Budget Committee and Coordination Committee was approved during the General Assembly.
